Hello Utah IAI!

I hope this message finds all of you well and healthy during these strange times!  This year has started off pretty rough for all of us, though I hope we can all find some level of comfort in the security of our jobs.  None of us are rich, but there is something to be said for job security!  The COVID-19 virus has presented several challenges for all of us personally and professionally.  Most of us have seen trainings canceled, schedules moved around, and some of us may even be working from home on occasion.  These changes have had an impact on the Utah IAI as well.  We met as a board earlier this year to begin discussing a spring conference, but decided not to proceed because of the imminent virus related closures.  However, we are in the process of planning a fall conference.  More information will be coming soon.

This year the board has experienced several changes to it’s membership.  After MANY years of service, Kelcee Vail, Elisa Farmer, and Heidi Reynaud have all earned a well deserved hiatus from the IAI board.  I hope you will all join me in thanking them for all of their efforts throughout the years.  I’d also like to recognize the work of Courtney Person over this last year as our President.  She will continue to serve on the board this year as past president.  This year, I am excited to serve as President of the Utah IAI, with Jordan Goode and Jason Romney serving as 1st and 2nd VP.  We are so happy to welcome several new members to the board, including Jason, Angie Peterson, and Amie Houghton.  Angie is currently serving as the under-secretary and Amie as the Sgt. At Arms.  All three of these individuals bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our board and I’m super excited to have them with us!  Bonnie Wilder-Estes and Deb Parkin have gracefully extended their service as secretary and IAI representative.  I think most of us are well aware that Bonnie and Deb have many years of service under their belt as well, and we couldn’t operate without them!

Right now, plans are underway to hold a short conference in the fall.  While we have tentative dates and locations in mind, all I can say for now is that we are hoping to hold the conference in September, coinciding with Suicide Awareness month.  None of us are strangers to suicide, with some of us likely responding to these calls on a weekly basis.  It is my hope that after this conference, we will be more engaged in thoroughly processing the scene and never respond to these calls as “just another suicide”.  Specific topics and courses will be announced in the coming months.

During this year’s earlier board meeting, we discussed a couple goals that we are hoping to focus on this year.  We hope to increase training opportunities throughout the state and increase our membership.  More details will be forthcoming about these goals as well.  If any of you have any thoughts or suggestions about the conference, or any goals we might want to focus on, please let me know!
